The author's manuscript of the Preludes and Fugues differs in many details from the versions of the first edition which appeared during Shostakovicht's lifetime (Muzgiz, Moscow, 1952) and all the subsequent editions - Russian and foreign (see detailed description of the differences compared with the author's manuscript in the Bar-by-Bar Comments in Vol. 113 of New Collected Works).
