Donatoni's questing reinterpretation of avant-garde values places him in the vanguard of composers of our time.  A master craftsman, he has never been content to rely on past successes to determine future artistic directions.  Instead, in a widely varied and substantial output, he has reflected upon the achievement of Webern, Cage and Stockhausen, and channelled their discoveries into new forms of his own devising.  With Berio, he is the outstanding Italian composer of his generation and a gifted and inspiring teacher.
