Description
Pneuma follows a number of successful collaborations between Gavin Bryars and Carolyn Carlson. The music gains its seven-part structure from the extracts of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s Air and Dreams that form the central ideas of the work. A rich, dark sonority is achieved in the orchestra with the omission of violins, flutes and oboes, and an improvisational turntable part, written for frequent collaborator Philip Jeck, contributes to the distinct soundworld typical of Bryars’ music.
