Matthias Perl studied from 1973 to 1977 at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin under Hans Peter Schmitz and passed his exams with honors. Subsequently he attended the London Guildhall School of Music with a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, was a master student of Peter Lloyd, and received a scholarship from the Herbert von Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978. From 1981 onward Matthias Perl played flute in the Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin; since 1984 he is solo flutist of the NDR Sinfonieorchester.
