Marko Nikodijevic was born in 1980 in Subotica, Serbia and studied composition in Belgrade with Srdjan Hofman and in Stuttgart with Marco Stroppa. He was awarded the Gaudeamus Music Prize in 2010 for cvetić, kućica … / la lugubre gondola, received one of the three annual Young Composers’ Prizes from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation in 2013, and in 2014 was recognised with the GEMA Deutscher Musikautor*innenpreis (German Composers’ Prize) in the category ‘Promotion of New Talent’. He has held residencies at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2012–13), the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani (2016), and in 2023–24 is a fellow of the German Academy in Rome at Villa Massimo.
His output features orchestral music, works for ensemble (sometimes with electronica), the opera VIVIER: Ein Nachtprotokoll (Munich Biennale, 2014) and two string quartets. The conductors Teodor Currentzis and Vladimir Jurowski have been important supporters in recent years, and the Ensemble intercontemporain has commissioned four works, including the large-scale From Within … for ensemble, electronica and LED sculpture, a collaboration with Robert Henke. Nikodijevic also produces and performs electronica in a duo with Luka Kozlovački. A second opera, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas, to a concept by the performance artist Marina Abramović, premiered in 2020.
