Genoël von Lilienstern was born in Monschau, Germany, in 1979. He studied composition with Younghi Pagh-Paan and Hanspeter Kyburz as well as sonology at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where his teachers included Klarenz Barlow. He composes instrumental and electronic music, music theatre scores, installations, and other interdisciplinary formats. His awards and distinctions include a scholarship from the Ensemble Modern International Academy (2008/09), a Tokyo Wonder Site Residency (2011), the Gargonza Arts Award at the recommendation of Peter Eötvös (2012), and scholarships from the graduate schools of Berlin University of the Arts (2012–14), Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris (2013/14) and the Villa Aurora in Los Angeles (2017). He is a co-founder of KTONAL, a group of composers dedicated to AI-powered sound generation, and is working on a doctorate at Hamburg University of Music and Theatre with a dissertation on composing with neuronal networks. Among the performers of his music are Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Southwest German RSO, Gürzenich-Orchestra, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ensemble Contrechamps, ensemble recherche, Ensemble Garage, Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Adapter, Hezarfen Ensemble and United Instruments of Lucilin. His works have been performed at the Ultraschall Festival Berlin, MaerzMusik, ECLAT, Munich Biennale, Cologne Opera, Kassel State Theatre, Mars Festival (Los Angeles), QuBit (New York), Tokyo Experimental Festival and Avanti! (Helsinki) under the batons of such conductors as Alejo Pérez, Enno Poppe, Robert HP Platz, Ilan Volkov and Mariano Chiacchiarini.
