Lukas Ligeti, drummer, composer, producer and son of the Hungarian composer György Ligeti, and his Beta Foly project developed out of a workshop which Ligeti organized with local musicians in the West African metropolis of Abidjan at the request of the Goethe Institut. It quickly grew into a real working band which was given the name of “Beta Foly”, which means “music from us all” in Malinké and defines much of the project’s philosophy. It not only refers to the fact that all participants have equal status in the music making process, but also to the influences and musicians’ cultural backgrounds which were worked into the pieces. Musical styles from Africa, Europe and America were brought together without ignoring the dialogue between differing concepts of ‘music’ or its structure. In this case, dialogue meant the confirmation of existing understanding as well as the necessary analytical accuracy in developing such mutual understanding: the search for a mutually acceptable new form of expression which would otherwise not be heard.
