Andreas Grünkorn was for many years the solo cellist of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester (DSO) in Berlin, before being invited in 2011 to assume the same position with the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg. Grünkorn studied with David Geringas at the Hochschule für Musik in Lübeck, where he completed his concert examination with honors. While still a student, he received the Schleswig-Holstein Support Prize, the first time the prize had been awarded to a cellist. Alexander Grünkorn has played with renowned conductors such as Jonathan Nott, Andrey Boreyko, Hans Graf, Leif Segerstam, Gary Bertini, Kent Nagano, and Neeme Järvi. He is frequently a guest of the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, and has toured with the group to the most important cities and festivals of Europe and Asia. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Grünkorn has performed with  Christian Tetzlaff, Emanuel Ax, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nabuko Imai, Daniel Hope, and the Hartog Quartet.
