Description

Is it possible to convey the abstract conception of God with words, or is it necessary to create an image in order to gain an understanding of this mystery? Arnold Schoenberg had been reflecting on this question long before his initial sketches of Moses und Aron. Moses is the thinker but is unable to formulate his concepts in words and requires the visual strength of his brother Aron to convince the people to follow a god whom they cannot see or feel.

The conflict between these two positions is insoluble and this was perhaps the reason why Schoenberg never finished the third act of his opera, although the libretto was already complete. The choir functions in the role of third protagonist placed between the antipodal figures of Moses and Aron, supporting the principle weight of the dramatic action.

Moses und Aron is based on a single twelve-tone row which the composer has used in ornate variations and transformations to create the magnificent architecture of this Twentieth Century operatic masterpiece.
