Alongside Mein Freund Bunbury, Casanova is the most successful musical to be created by the author team Gerd Natschinski and Jürgen Degenhardt. Soon after its world premiere at the Metropoltheater in Berlin, the musical received its magnificent West German premiere at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich during the season 1980/81 and was subsequently produced for television by the German broadcasting company ZDF.
The plot focuses on ten years in the life of Casanova which he recalls while having retired to a monastery after fleeing from the lead chambers in Venice. The authors are less interested in a biographical approach, preferring to utilise the classical conventions of a musical to reveal a glittering portrait of an era torn between Enlightenment and superstition and between progress and reaction displaying unmistakable parallels to the present era. Their Casanova is a talented maverick living in a period of profound and violent upheaval, searching for a path between error and insight – and failing in his attempts.
