Description
My Piano Concerto entitled Zero consists of five movements (without a break); it’s motto 'Existence was born from non-existence' is quoted from the Rig Veda.
The titles of the movements reflect very different approaches to the problems of infinity, eternity and the elapse of time. It starts with The Zeroth Movement, followed by Zero Hour, Vanishing Point, Ground Zero, ending with ∞-To Infinity and Beyond. The central movement is Vanishing Point; according to the programmatic title, the solo piano cadenza in this movement comes to a point where musical space and time are filled with nothingness (in Japanese called 'Mu'). Only after having reached this moment of total emptiness can musical 'existence' be re-born and proceed towards the end (or, beyond, towards infinity). There is also an 'inner piano', as a foil to the solo piano, creating echoes and delays from the heart of the orchestra. Atsuhiko Gondai
