Description

The score of Kurt Weill's early masterpiece composed back in 1922 was long considered to have been lost, but was suddenly rediscovered only a few years ago. The work depicts how everyday objects come to life in a spooky manner in a children's bedroom at night in the tradition of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. The nightmarish thoughts of the day that constantly interrupt sleep throughout the night indicate that Zaubernacht was also intended for adult audiences. A special feature of this pantomime or ballet music is the small vocal role for soprano.
