Description

It is well known that humpback whales communicate through song in the vast ocean. Among their songs for various purposes, Noriko Koide focused on courtship songs from male to female. This piece provides an opportunity for children in the hall to join with an orchestra in an interactive performance experience, using their own ocean drums which children create from, for example, a large paper envelope and many beads before the concert. This transforms the entire venue into a vast ocean, into which humpback whales appear. Listening to the songs of whales is like listening to the voices of the nature that surrounds us. This piece could be seen as a big question from the composer to children: to draw attention to the current state of environmental destruction, to encourage interest in nature, and to think about what we can do for the future.
