Description

Since 1997, Toshio Hosokawa has been working on a series of Voyages. Each work has a different solo instrument accompanied by a chamber orchestra or ensemble. The solo instruments of the ten works which make up the cycle are: violin (Voyage I), bassoon (Voyage II), trombone (Voyage III), accordion (Voyage IV), flute (Voyage V), viola (Voyage VI), trumpet (Voyage VII), tuba (Voyage VIII), guitar (Voyage IX) and shakuhachi (Voyage X).

Hosokawa drew his inspiration for the Voyage cycle as follows: The soloist symbolizes a human being that throws a song to the ensemble/orchestra standing for the universe enclosing the human being, and the universe responds the song. The song reaches the universe and the reaction returns to the human being again. Hosokawa called the process of these exchanges Voyage, and thought a sense of unity develops between human beings and the universe through the journey.
