Description

Three Farewells is the second work Turnage has written for the Nash Ensemble.  Each Farewell has at its heart a hidden text, rathern in the manner of Hans Werner Henze's 'Sieben Liebeslieder' for cello and orchestra.

1.  Chorale: O Fallada die du hangest (Brecht).  Marked 'Tender' and ending 'Slow and stately'

2.  Music to hear (Shakespeare Sonnet No.8).  Marked 'Free and cadenza-like'; a solo for viola accompanied by muted cello

3.  All will be well (duet between Pamina and Papageno from 'The Magic Flute')

Three Farewells was commissioned by the Nash Ensemble with funds provided by IBM UK Ltd and is dedicated to 'Amelia Freeman and the Nash Ensemble'.  It was premiereed at the Almeida Festival on 8 July 1990, and has since been perfromed widely both abroad and in the UK.
