Description

This "opera for the concert stage" is divided into 16 sections, comprising "action scenes" as well as orchestral and orchestra-and-chorus sections to form a prologue, three symphonic interludes, and an epilogue. As with Shchedrin's other operas, this one is derived from a work of classic Russian literature, in this case a novel by Nikolai Leskov.
