Description
The title Tabi-bito is Japanese for “traveller”, symbolized by the soloist. At the outset of the work, the soloist raises his/her arms slowly in the air and strikes one note loudly as if to draw a circle. ’The act of striking something and producing sound is very primordial’ describes the composer in his notes on the work. These somewhat ritualistic physical acts on the part of the soloist can be seen as a critique of contemporary music, in that the primitive impulse of the human body to produce sound and the very simple physical sensation and joy of creating sound can so often be forgotten.
