The Fantasie from the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten, compiled by Richard Strauss in 1946, reduces the opulent large-scale orchestration of the opera (originally composed between 1918 and 1923) probably influenced by the radical limitations of the musical world as experienced by the composer in the aftermath of the Second World War. I have always harboured the desire to adapt this fantasy and restore the opulent tonal colouring of the original operatic score, thereby recreating its unique tonal depth. In this arrangement few compositional alterations in the transition passages between individual scenes were necessary; the special dramaturgy of the Fantasie remained unaltered. (Peter Ruzicka)
