Description

For decades, Ludger Brümmer has represented a unique, courageous, and often instantly recognisable voice in electronic, algorithmic, and computer music. He develops structures that lead to aesthetic experiences normally found, if at all, only in the most expressive of instrumental works.

Ludger Brümmer’s music is dominated by processes. All processes are on a trajectory towards a climax or evolve from a climax to a minimum. Ultimately, a complete lack of orientation is to be achieved in the climax: an established system has used itself up and thereby becomes obsolete. The moment remains when the idea, the sonic construction, the parameters have reached the maximum and collapse in on themselves to make room for something new.

Ludger Brümmer’s compositions oscillate between moments of greatest energy and complete emptiness. Both states can be absolutely equal in their emotional intensity. There is an alternation between inner and outer perception, between intense stimuli from outside and the subtle inner experience of time.

Radical from the get-go, Brümmer has unified instrument and musical structure in most of his digitally produced works. He can thus be seen as a digital pioneer, unifying our perception of his music not just conceptually but experientially across all time levels in works of often symphonic proportions.

The double CD "Ludger Brümmer: Sonic Patterns", published by WERGO in the Edition ZKM, is a result of the project EASTN-DC and funded by the program 'Creative Europe'. The first double CD "Ludger Brümmer: Spheres of Resonance" was released by WERGO in August 2022.

A production of ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe.

Edition ZKM

In the edition ZKM electronic, the ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik (IMA) currently releases productions on the label WERGO which are based on electronic media and which, in the broadest sense, can be described as electro-acoustic compositions. Guest artists from all over the world are invited to work in the music studios to realize specific projects. The productions, ranging from digital synthesis and algorithmic composition to the integration of live electronics, from radio art to sound installation, encompass a broad spectrum of that locus where digital technology stimulates musical fantasy. More information on the ZKM you can find here.
The productions highlight current works of contemporary composers and musicians which are characterized by technological and aesthetic developments, while sometimes crossing the lines of the auditory by means of visualizations or multimedia concepts. Even in the field of audio productions, new territory is entered with 5.1 panoramas, for example, in order to depict the often three-dimensional compositions in an adequate manner. The aim is to spread the electro-acoustic music and sustain its release.
Starting in 2011, the label ZKM milestones releases selected works of contemporary music which, with regard to aesthetics, play a special role in recent music history and the academic examination and publication of which contribute to a better understanding of the cultural landscape.
