Description
Igor Stravinsky composed his Scherzo fantastique with inspiration from La vie des abeilles [The Life of the Bee] by Maurice Maeterlinck, who was an enthusiastic beekeeper. It is also likely that the 26-year-old Stravinsky was influenced by The Flight of the Bumblebee by his teacher Nikolai Rimsky- Korsakov – an almost literal quotation of this work actually appears in the recapitulation. By nature, the piece is a true perpetuum mobile, with its note repetitions, and chromatic and diatonic semiquaver runs, set off by a colorful instrumentation and catchy cantilenas in the central dolce espressivo section.
