Description
Hermann Reutter chose the dramatic scena Saul by the Austrian poet Alexander Lernet-Holenia for his opera of the same name. Consisting of a series of melodramatic and sung dialogues, the music avoids any form of Romantic excess and is more intended to highlight and illuminate the text. In the version dating from 1947 the original 13-piece instrumental ensemble has been extended into a large orchestra and intensifies the simplistic image of the protagonists with a touch of Expressionism.
