Product Details

Description

Known as the Japanese Schindler, Chiune Sugihara was a diplomat who saved over 6,000 Jews in Kaunas, Lithuania during WW II by issuing transit visas though it was against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The opera begins with a flashback of an Old Man who is one of those saved by the ‘visa of life’. The heroic story of Sugihara was entrusted to a Sakura tree, and its fairy repeatedly sings ‘I will keep on standing still here, patiently, always, no matter what happens’. The Sakura and Sugihara’s name take root in the land, people, and succeeding generations. Atsuhiko Gondai
