Description
Rummelplatz [Fairground] is set in the period before the East German uprising of 1953. The opera is focused on a younger generation living in the early days of the GDR [German Democratic Republic], the post-war state which, in the aftermath of the destruction wreaked by World War II and Russian occupation, offered a vision for a better future. In an attempt to escape from the harsh daily working conditions in the uranium mining industry, friends meet up at a fairground which becomes the location for orgiastic celebration, drinking alcohol and trialling their strength. The fairground is also a place of refuge and a drug of derestriction: an escape from a lack of perspective and narrow lives, avoiding the traumas of post-war social disintegration and Nazi terror, and a place where young people can indulge in friendship, love and sex.
