Based on a contrapuntal elaboration of a single motif, this is an intense work that grips the listener throughout its 15 mins. Alexander Goehr was partly inspired by listening to the polyphonic masses of Josquin Desprez and Ockeghem. The Quintet received a warm welcome at its première by the Nash Ensemble in 2008.
