The Piano Trio (1988) employs the compositional ideas of Heiniö's symphony Possible Worlds but in a more condensed form. The same harmonic material is taken through a number of worlds and picks up aspects from them en route. Extreme juxtapositions are avoided in favour of continuous transition. The work is in two movements, dominated by quickish tempi but connected by slow and meditative passages.
