Description
The works of Brahms and Schumann and the more recent tradition of Schoenberg’s pupils were in the back of Alexander Goehr’s mind when he accepted Peter Serkin’s request to write a piano quintet. But in fact Goehr was reminded of Haydn’s Piano Trios when considering his own approach to the work. In Haydn’s works, the string instruments role is primarily to support the piano’s melodic lines, and it’s this formula that Goehr eventually followed.
