Liepāja Symphony Orchestra

About Liepāja Symphony Orchestra

The Liepāja Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is the oldest, still functioning orchestra in the Baltic States and the only Latvian professional orchestra outside Riga, the country’s capital. An important period for the orchestra was the time from 1992 to 2009, when Imants Resnis was the orchestra’s artistic director and chief conductor. He expanded the range of the orchestra’s performance considerably and recorded important compositions. The orchestra’s participation in the International Piano Stars Festival has a substantial tradition that began in 1993; more than 170 pianists from some 30 countries have taken part so far. The promotion of Latvian music and composers is a primary concern of the LSO; the first concertos have already been premiered in the orchestra’s monumental commissioning cycle, “12 Liepāja Concertos”.

The orchestra received the Latvian “Grand Music Award” in 2006 and has been awarded the “Golden Microphone”, the Latvian recorded music award, six times. Since 2010, the LSO has been an official state orchestra supported by the Ministry of Culture. In addition to regular concerts in Riga, Liepāja, and other Latvian cities, the orchestra also tours regularly abroad, having performed in Spain, Malaysia, Great Britain, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Oman, India, China and other countries. The professionalism of the orchestra is confirmed by its participation in significant national events: the opening ceremonies of major culture institutions, such as the Rezekne concert hall Gors, the reconstructed Riga Culture Palace Ziemeļblāzma (Northern Lights), and the Latvian National Library, known as the “Castle of Light”.
