Description
This Viola Concerto – his first commission from a major American orchestra – develops the lyrical side of Mark-Anthony Turnage to a fuller extent than had been the case in his earlier music. The music oscillates between two emotional poles that are given by Turnage the performance instructions of ‘rough’ and ‘calm’, but the melodic artistry of the original soloist, Yuri Bashmet, dominates the work.
