Description
In just seven minutes this piece grows from its contemplative, calm beginning over a ground bass into a contrapuntal, fantastia-like full-bodied sound. As well as hinting at new beginnings, the title is also a reference to a song from Joy Division’s seminar album ‘Unknown Pleasures’.
In performace the the violins should ideally be placed antiphonally on the stage (violin 1 to the left of the conductor, violin 2 to the right) with the violas, cellos and basses in the centre. Where possible, all players should stand.
