Description
Lorin Maazel composed his cycle of three concertos between 1995 and 1997: Music for Violoncello and Orchestra Op. 10, Music for Flute and Orchestra (presented here), and Music for Violin and Orchestra Op. 12. In each of these works there is an obbligato instrument playing in dialogue with the soloist. Music for Flute and Orchestra was written for James Galway. ‘Familiarity with his flute timbre, virtuoso technique and easy-going temperament all influenced the atmosphere of this work which is alternately tender, jocular, wistful and effervescent.’ (Lorin Maazel)
