Mirrors

These character pieces were written for pianist Annie Yim. As she shares a Hong Kong heritage with the composer, the sounds and scenes of their childhood were reverberating in the composer’s mind during the composition process. Rather than making big statements, these musical vinaigrette are made of snippets of emotions triggered by reminiscences of their early years in the once-British-colony. In a way, these are scènes d’enfants (alluding to Frederic Mompou), paying homage to a place which has been rapidly transformed - or eradicated - over the years. These are remembrances of things past, often with the tinkling of Felix Mendelssohn from ice-cream vans.
