Description

A little less than two years ago my wife and I were invited to visit Viena-Karelia, which is an area (belonging to Russia) where much of our national epic, Kalevala, was collected. Echoes of that tradition still exist. We met a remarkable lady of 92, who for more than three hours told us old stories and fairy tales, sang ancient songs and poems – all of this delivered in a beautiful, old Finnish dialect, and with great vigour and humour. I have tried to capture some of our unforgettable experience in Kolme puuta, kolme poikaa, which is based on a very traditional, classic folktale, recently collected in Viena Karelia. Olli Mustonen
