Description

The newly composed Harp Concerto by Peter Eötvös displays consummate virtuosity despite its exceptionally sparse texture. After an introductory cadenza, the first movement is marked Allegro e felice, bright and cheerful. The calm second movement is a subtle Hommage à Ravel in which the solo instrument is embedded in sophisticated but natural-sounding tonal blends featuring different combinations of orchestral groups. In contrast, the final movement is saturated with elementally forceful sounds, culminating in free glissandos on the harp against which the orchestra plays a type of anti-cadenza: no chords, no melody and no citation.
