Description

Hermann Reutter quite deliberately did not refer to his Hamlet, which was premiered in Stuttgart in 1980, as an 'opera' but as a 'drama for music'. What is characteristic of his treatment, which follows the narrative structure of Shakespeare's original, is the lack of ensemble and chorus scenes. With just a few exceptions, the musical structure of the work is dominated by lyric or dramatic dialogues, arioso and cantabile forms and instrumental interludes. Much of the music was later published separately for concert performance, such as Epitaph für Ophelia (in versions for violin and chamber orchestra and violin and piano), Drei Lieder der Ophelia (for soprano and piano), Hamlets erster und zweiter Monolog (for baritone and piano) and above all Hamlet-Sinfonie of 1982, a reduced concert version of the opera of 90 minutes' duration.
