Gesänge der Frühe

nach Schumann und Hölderlin
für Chor, Orchester und Tonband
choir, orchestra and tape
Branded with mental disease as a mark of Cain, Robert Schumann was and is more than any other composer marked out for misunderstanding. On the one hand some works of the early and middle period are praised to the skies, on the other hand the more unadorned and concentrated late works are covered with a cloak of silence. Description

In this work, Heinz Holliger combines the poetry of Friedrich Hölderlin with the music of Robert Schumann. What both artists have in common is their attempt to redefine their relationship with nature, such as in Der Frühling or the piano cycle Gesänge der Frühe Op. 133. The latter was first dedicated by Schumann to Hölderlin’s ideal figure of Diotima which makes the connection between the two even clearer.

What Schumann and Hölderlin also had in common was that their life ended in madness. In Gesänge der Frühe, Holliger reminds of this fact by quoting from Schumann‘s autopsy report, among others. As musical quotations he uses excerpts from various works, including Gesänge der Frühe, the Eb major theme of Geistervariationen and parts from the music of Manfred.
