Ryan Wigglesworth’s orchestral Études-Tableaux was commissioned as part of his residency with The Cleveland Orchestra. The work was inspired by one of the composer’s own earlier pieces, which itself he describes as ‘an act of interpretation’: the music is spun around an eclectic framework of pre-existing musical fragments. Though these underlying fragments were integral to its formation, they are undetectable in the finished work. Études-Tableaux neatly continues this spiral of reference.
