Description
The world premiere of Die Frau ohne Schatten took place on 10 October 1919. This musically stunning opera represents the pinnacle of the Late Romantic art of instrumentation and was a high point in the artistic collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal who worked in parallel on the text and music from 1911 to 1915.
Hofmannsthal deliberately oriented the libretto, which was a free adaptation of Goethe’s Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten [Conversations of German Emigrants], to Mozart’s The Magic Flute: two contrasting couples have to prove themselves through human-moralistic trials in a fantasy world. The iconic opera is not merely an escape into inner magic worlds around the time of the First World War, but is more like a fairy tale written under the impression of nascent psychoanalysis.
