Description
The Greek myth of the nymph Daphne who is transformed into a laurel tree has frequently been portrayed in art, music and literature. In the operatic adaptation by Richard Strauss, the tragic moment occurs with the death of Leukippos, Daphne’s friend of her youth. She only discovers her true love for him at the very moment when Apollo’s arrow causes his death. Consciousstricken, Apollo pleads with Zeus to return Daphne to him in the form of an evergreen laurel tree from which her voice will emanate tenderly from the branches („Ich komme, grünende Brüder”).
