Description
A concert piece with this extravagant instrumentation is unprecedented – with one exception. The tuba quartet is supported by a large string orchestra augmented by timpani, percussion and harp. I deliberately omit any wind players so that the effect of the tubas remains unchallenged.
The four soloists juxtapose the orchestra – both as a quartet in various duo and trio combinations, and individually. The requirements of the quartet are different in each of the three movements: The first movement is scored for three tubas in F and one tuba in Bb, the second for two euphoniums and two tubas in F, the third for one euphonium, two tubas in F and one tuba in B-flat.
