Description

A man takes leave of his wife and children to set forth on a trip through the mountains for an indefinite time. The family left behind remain in a state of numbing disappointment, emptiness and helplessness. Ultimately, the woman makes an initial cautious attempt to liberate herself from the emotional fetters of a rigid convention focused on the man as the centre of her existence.
This scene almost devoid of action originates from Lorca’s ‘Teatro breve’, a collection of short scenes and fragments published in 1928. The music by Hans-Jürgen von Bose is a collage of live produced sounds and musical fragments and electronically distorted sounds on tape, reinforced by a madrigal quartet placed in the orchestra pit. The quartet retains a cool distance to the enigmatic action onstage and creates suggestive musical spaces with their soundscapes and motivic splinters, permitting extensive freedom in the gestural interpretation of the scene.
