Description

The ceremonial dance of the title is not a dance in actual existence, but a dance in my imagination. I got this idea from a dance I once saw that relied on the slow deliberate movements of Gagaku. As opposed to western dance, which aims at the heavens by resisting gravity and is based on geometric movements, ancient Japanese dance, instead of opposing gravity, plants the lower half of the body firmly on the Earth and has the ability to move in line with the slow movement of the Earth and the universe. The movement of the body line eventually unites with the power flowing to the centre of the universe. (Toshio Hosokawa)
