Description
Wolfgang Fortner composed his Bizet-Collagen for the choreographer John Cranko and the Stuttgart Ballet. Fortner decided against writing a completely new work on the well-known story of Carmen, instead creating collages and variations on Georges Bizet’s music in collaboration with his pupil Wilfried Steinbrenner. The music oscillates between an ironic, clichéeridden playfulness and movements with greater serious commitment.
Popular hits such as the Habanera and the march from Act IV are shown in a completely new light. In the central pas de deux between Carmen and Don José, Fortner incorporates additional motifs from Bizet’s Symphony in C major and the second Arlésienne-Suite in the form of variations. As one of the large-scale story ballets of the 20th century, a charmingly modern instrumentation has made this ballet one of Fortner’s most popular works.
