Fassung mit reduziertem Orchester
Jugendoper nach einem Fluchtplan von Euripides
Aft er the politcal murder of her father, Makaria and her siblings are forced to fl ee from their native country. They separate to shake off pursuers. Their aim is to reach an old companion of their father who is still alive and living in exile. Makaria is the first to arrive at the arranged meeting point and encounters the old man’s son. Both immediately recognise that they are kindred souls and fall deeply in love with each other. Their happiness is however curtailed as Makaria must accompany her siblings to a safe place once they have arrived. Now the young man does everything in his powers not to lose Makaria. His love makes him into a traitor. The required professional ensemble can be augmented in the chorus with children and young persons. The reduced version is characterised by its single woodwind scoring.

Description

Border takes up motifs from the tragedy The Children of Heracles by Euripides and transfers them into the world of young people living now under a totalitarian regime who are in fear of their lives. The constraints to which Makaria and her siblings are subjected while fleeing after the politically motivated murder of their father are shaped by the tensions between flight and expulsion, asylum and responsibility, love and violence and emotion and morals. Border is a cooperative project between the opera ensemble and opera studio at Cologne Opera, a choir from the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, an extra choir consisting of young persons from Cologne and the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne.
