Product Details

Description

Babi Yar is named for the location near Kiev where a mass slaughter by the SS took place. Steve Martland’s aim in composing the first and only orchestral work of his career was to confront the brutality of such acts, acknowledging the possibility of hope even in the face of violence.

Martland divides the orchestra into three sections, each acting autonomously, incorporating instruments and performance practices more closely associated with jazz and rock music. His fierce, inimi table spirit is present through the shattering as well as serene moments of this monumental work.
