Description
It was in the wake of three events with lectures and concerts dedicated to the composer Younghi Pagh-Paan on the occasion of her 70th birthday that this first book about her work was published. On 14 November 2015, a musicological colloquium was held at her long-standing place of work, the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen. "Poetry, Image and Voice. The Musical World of Younghi Pagh-Paan" was the theme of a symposium, which took place on 1 December 2015 at the Korean Cultural Centre in Berlin. Most recently, the Ewha Music Research Institute of the Ewha Women's University in Seoul honoured Younghi Pagh-Paan with a conference on 28 October 2016.
Eight of the participants in these events reworked their lectures into essays for this publication. In addition, there are two contributions that the authors have written especially for this volume. They contain an overview of more than 40 creative years of Younghi Pagh-Paan, a review of the professor of composition's teaching, an analysis of her early self-portrayal, and studies that deal with a number of works of various instrumentations from different phases of her compositional work, looking at the East-West dichotomy of the Korean-born composer, who has lived and worked in Germany for 46 years, from a variety of perspectives.
