Andrew Normans erste Oper A Trip to the Moon begleitet eine Gruppe schusseliger Astronomen, die den Mond erforschen. Gleichzeitig versuchen sie, ihre kaputte Rakete zu reparieren und treffen auf mysteriöse Mondmenschen, die ihrerseits mit Gefahren zu kämpfen haben. Die Inspiration zur Oper erhielt Norman von dem gleichnamigen bahnbrechenden Stummfilm von Georges Méliès aus dem Jahr 1902. „Der Film und seine retro-futuristische Welt haben mich angesprochen und ich wusste, dass sie das richtige Sujet für ein gemeinsames Spiel von Laien und Profis auf der Bühne ist. Es ist eine skurrile, lustige, aber auch seltsame Geschichte, die eine Gemeinschaft braucht, um erzählt zu werden. Ich habe den Stoff verwendet, um daraus eine Art Parabel darüber zu schaffen, wie wir selbst mit Fremden umgehen.“ (Andrew Norman)

Taking inspiration from Georges Méliès’ seminal 1902 silent film A Trip to the Moon, this whimsical opera follows a band of bumbling astronomers and their documentarian (the young Georges Méliès himself) as they explore the moon, attempt to fix their broken rocket, and interact with a mysterious race of moon people who are facing a perilous threat of their own.
