Description
The Norns, after whom the first movement of this symphony is named, consist of the three Nordic goddesses of fate: Urd, Verdandi and Skuld (‘What Once Was’, ‘What is Coming into Being’, and ‘What Shall Be’). They are represented by three female singers whose voices match the vocal registers of Richard Wagner’s Götterdämmerung.
Volker David Kirchner employs a weaving loom and the winding of a clock as percussion instruments to evoke the unending activity of the goddesses of fate as they spin the thread of destiny. Kirchner provides further insight to his intentions with a quotation from Die schlesischen Weber [The Silesian Weaver] by Heinrich Heine: ‘Germany, we are weaving your shroud, we are weaving a curse threefold.’
