Judith Schalansky’s book Pocket Atlas of Remote Islands and its subtitle Fifty Islands I have not visited and never will was the catalyst for this work. As a child, Schalansky would travel through the pages of an atlas as a form of escapism, visiting exotic places within her mind. I’ve replicated this idea through a new exploration of my work No. 56 to create No. 56b (Nine Islands), a series of short and strange standalone pieces uncovering imaginary locations. In these islands we can dream beyond the restrictions of the world. Richard Ayres
