The three movement concerto was a commission from the Minnesota Orchestra. The solo is echoed by two harps in the orchestra: the composer wanted the magnificent sound to be multiplied. The simple melody of the second movement is coloured in archaic hues by the orchestra, whereas the finale is festive, 'solenne'. It is here that the sound of the three harps is most colourful, most singing.
