What do the abbreviations in the orchestra instrumentation mean?

Orchestra instrumentation follows the customary order of instruments as listed in a score: Woodwinds – Brass – Percussion – Strings
Within these groups, each of the instruments is indicated by a number. Instruments in brackets are doubling instruments.

Example:

2 oboes
2 clarinets (in Bb)
2 bassoons

2 French horns
2 trumpets
no trombones
